Beat the Heat: Tips for Staying Hydrated During the Summer
Staying hydrated during the summer months is essential for overall health and well-being. As the temperature rises, so does the risk of dehydration, which can lead to a range of health issues such as fatigue, headaches, and even heat stroke. Proper hydration helps to regulate body temperature, aids in digestion, and promotes healthy skin.
Whether you're participating in outdoor activities or simply lounging in the sun, it's important to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Other hydrating options, such as fruit-infused water, fresh juice and electrolyte-replenishing beverages, can also contribute to optimal hydration levels. So, make sure to keep your hydrating beverage close by all summer long! Here are some of our personal favs:
Water… Duh
Plain water is the most natural and effective way to hydrate your body. Drinking adequate amounts of water can help regulate body temperature and support essential bodily functions. Add a pinch of sea salt and some fresh lemon for an added boost. Sea salt enables cell hydration as the minerals in salts = electrolytes and citrus fruits contain calcium and potassium, which, when combined with salt, provide a balance for pH and fluid levels in the body.
Watermelon Juice
Watery fruit and vegetables often contain levels of minerals and sugar that mirror our bodies natural fluids so they can hydrate you more effectively than water alone! Watermelon is composed of 92 percent water, eight percent sugar and contains essential rehydration salts calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium. Watermelon is rich in Vitamin C, beta carotene and lycopene. A University of Naples study found that plant chemicals lutein and zeaxanthin (found in fruit such as watermelon) - help hydrate twice as much as water. Watermelon = hydration superstar!
Coconut water
Coconut water is a refreshing drink that's rich in potassium, magnesium, and calcium. It's a great source of electrolytes, making it a perfect post-workout beverage. Our favorite brand is Harmless Harvest. Try serving over ice with some fresh lime juice!
Herbal tea
Herbal teas like peppermint, chamomile, and ginger tea are excellent hydrating options. They are caffeine-free, soothing, and can help relax your body. Also delicious iced with some fresh fruit added!
Veg juice
Vegetable juice is a great way to hydrate your body and get your daily dose of essential vitamins and minerals. It's recommended to drink freshly squeezed vegetable juice for maximum benefits. Our favorites during the summer are cucumber and celery AND you can mix with coconut water!
Got Milk?
Milk contains a variety of essential nutrients, including calcium, protein, and vitamins. It's a healthy and hydrating option for people of all ages. If going for milk we recommend finding a local raw milk! Raw milk contains a greater amount of bioavailable nutrients than pasteurized milk along with a wide array of beneficial enzymes and probiotics which help support immune and gut health.
We hope this list helps and gives your some hydrating beverage inspo! Be sure to keep those cells nice and hydrated this summer! You will feel better, have more energy, glowing skin and really be able to enjoy your summer!! 🌞
